Nestled in the cottonwoods, El Pinto was founded with eight tables in 1962. Twin brothers John and Jim Thomas, known as the Salsa Twins, carry on the family tradition and have expanded El Pinto into the quintessential "Spot" for healthy and fresh New Mexican cuisine. Experience an authentic Taste of New Mexico. Reservations are recommended. The Salsa Twins are pairing tradition with innovative healthy nutrition at El Pinto. El Pinto is proud to have the first and only Animal Welfare Approved laying hen program on property. 200 hens lay pasture raised eggs for daily use. An onsite green house produces over 5,000 lbs of organically grown greens. Freshness is throughout El Pinto. El Pinto uses chile from Hatch, NM, dryland beans from CO, healthy sunflower oil for frying, Celtic sea salt for seasoning, and local ingredients when in season. It has been featured on Food Network, Travel Channel and the BBC among other places. Dog friendly. Ask for the "Puppy Patio."

This is a great place to go if your in the mood for some great New Mexican food and great and relaxing atmosphere. The ambiance is pretty amazing and you will be greeted with pictures of all the celebrities and former United States presidents who ate here. The only complaint is the buffet is only for a few hours during the week, which makes it almost impossible to enjoy. Also, the buffet could be better the food is always kind of dry making it kind of bland. Overall, this place is highly recommend!

This restaurant is more "hype" than anything else. It's a fun trip outside of Albuquerque. Like any tourist, I purchased a jar of the green chili salsa to go. The food was good, better than average Latino fare found in the midwest. The ambiance made the evening special. The story of the hatch chilies grown in the area, making the restaurant famous, as well as the entertainment made the overall experience a fun outing for all.

My family live in the north valley and have been eating at el pinto since they opened their doors in the early 60's. The twins bussed the tables. So, I can honestly say they have gotten to big including their heads/egos. I have moved to another state and recently stopped by to get two enchilada dinners to go. I was shocked to get a bill of 50+ dollars. I was not impressed by all the celebrity pictures on the wall, reason to charge more? Yes, they have added on so much I hardly recognize the place. I just wish it was a bit smaller and still the local friendly, reasonable spot it was.

Questions & Answers

The red chile sauce is the same as red enchilada sauce. In NM generally we simply call it red chile. In other parts of the country it is better recognized as enchilada sauce. However, be aware most enchilada sauce sold in grocery stores nationally is tomato based. Traditional enchilada sauce from New Mexico is only red chile. Ours is sun-dried red chile from Hatch, NM.
